Essential tips to safeguard your home from storms

health-and-home

February 13, 2024

Owning a home is a major investment. That’s why it’s so important to protect your property against the unpredictable forces of nature. With so many heavy rains and thunderstorms taking place across the country, we’re here to assist you in safeguarding your home.

Follow these essential tips and ensure that your home is ready for whatever the weather throws at it.

1. Inspect your roof

The first line of defense against hailstorms and rain is your roof. To ensure that it’s in good shape, it is imperative to perform regular inspections to help identify potential weaknesses, loose tiles or any existing damage. If you’re unsure of what to look for, get a professional in. They can assist you in ensuring that your roof is in good condition. Should there be any repairs required, these can be done timeously to avoid further damage.

2. Upgrade your windows and doors

Significant damage from leaks and rot can occur if your home has wooden windows and doorframes. Consider replacing them with a more durable option such as aluminium. If you can’t do this, then performing essential maintenance like sanding and sealing will help to keep them in good condition.

3. Install or clear storm water drains

Having stormwater drains outside your property isn’t always a guarantee that the water won’t come into your garden and home. Often, the storm water drains are blocked with debris from the road. If your property doesn't have a drain, then it is best to add one. This can prevent the water from pooling around your house and causing damage. If you do have, do regular checks to make sure they’re clear of any debris.

4. Clean out gutters and down pipes

To ensure that rainwater doesn’t damage the foundation of your home, gutters and down pipes must be cleaned out regularly. By doing this, you can prevent clogging and the water can flow down freely and away from your house.

5. Cut back trees

Big branches can cause major damage to your house, electric fencing or boundary walls if they fall during a storm. So, if you have a well-established garden with large bushes and trees, keep them trimmed back to avoid any damage. It is also advisable to add extra topsoil to the base of trees to help prevent them from being uprooted by strong winds.

6. Secure your outdoor furniture

Outdoor furniture, umbrellas, braais, gardening tools and other loose items can cause extreme damage if they aren’t secured, and a storm hits. Rather bring them inside or secure these items properly to reduce the risk of them being tossed around by high winds.

At Auto & General, we encourage you to take these steps to protect your home and property. Get in touch with us to make sure you are correctly covered should you experience any damage.
